01 · The Seed

Hustler Magazine had a feature interview lined up with Randy and Jason Sklar, identical twins you've seen on ESPN, Comedy Central and Showtime. The magazine handed me the entire visual side: the shoot, art direction, photo selection, color correction, retouching and the finished layouts. A celebrity feature lives or dies on whether the pictures and the pages feel like one idea, so that's where I started.

02 · The Groundwork

When your subjects are identical twins, doubling becomes the design language. I built the whole feature around that: a headline that repeats its own R, mirrored compositions on the opener, and one continuous studio blue deep enough for photography and typography to share the same space. I shot with the layout already in my head, so every pose was framed knowing it would have to hold its own beside columns of type.

03 · The Growth

The opener sets the tone: SKLARRED FOR LIFE in heavy condensed caps, the second R knocked back to an outline so the name reads twice, a typographic twin. Randy and Jason peek in from either side of the spread in near-mirror poses, cut clean against a royal-blue gradient that carries across all three spreads.

Inside, the brothers do what physical comedians do: leapfrogging each other full-frame, striking yoga poses along the base of the interview columns, mugging straight down the lens. The retouching keeps skin tones warm against all that cool blue, and oversized slab-serif pull quotes with quotation marks the size of a fist carry the interview's voice between photographs. Shoot, selects, color, layout: one hand on all of it, which is why it reads as one piece.

“When your subjects are identical twins, doubling becomes the design language.”

04 · The Bloom

The feature ran as three full spreads with my name on the photography credit, right there on the page. It's one of ninety projects I've delivered for Hustler Magazine, and a favorite for a simple reason: when the same person shoots the pictures and builds the pages, nothing gets lost in the handoff.
